ASSISTANT LIBRARIAN: INFORMATION ACCESS SERVICES

Salary scale: (R223 524.00 – R256 558.00) Total Cost-to-Company

The NLSA invites applications from suitably qualified persons for appointment on a permanent basis, as Assistant Librarian. The successful individual will be based at the Pretoria Campus.
The successful candidate will report to the Manager: Information Access Services.

Responsibilities

Assist Library Users
• Provide reference services to the public on site by conducting reference interviews and analysing the information needs of the users.
• Correspond with the remote users and make follow up when necessary to do so.
• Conduct Library Instruction and Information Literacy training for members of the public and staff.
• Issue invoices, receive cash and provide receipts for serviced rendered according to the approved tariffs.
• Search for electronic publications from various sources such as the internet and subscribed databases (e.g., Sabinet-Online; Press Reader; World Share Management System) when assisting library users.
• Assist with conducting client surveys regarding services, satisfaction level and study collection needs from time to time.
• Assist library users in booking the discussion room.
• Make photocopies for users within the bounds of Copyright Act.
• Provide orientation by assisting users to locate and retrieve publications within the library

Collections Maintenance
• Responsible for the open shelve collection – selection of titles for ordering, based on user needs, weeding of redundant material and regular liaison with users to assess their collection needs
• Collect library material from various areas in the library e.g., information desk, reading tables, photocopying room etc.
• Shelf reads collections on a regular basis to ensure that each book is in its specific location to facilitate the retrieval of information
• Optimise space by moving the collection around to optimise usage of the library space
• Ensure that the books are in a good condition, liaise with relevant departments regarding items that are damaged for repairs
• Report items that are missing or cannot be traced, this should be from both stacks and open shelves
• Promote library material through exhibitions

Other Responsibilities
• Record service point statistics for monthly, quarterly, and annual reporting
• Patrol the user areas to check that users comply with the rules for usage of the library
• Maintain and foster cooperative and courteous working relationships with users and staff
• Give inputs on policies, understand procedures, and apply them to library operations
• Attend in-service training, workshops to improve service delivery
• Participate in professional associations to develop knowledge and skills required
• Participate in planning sessions and section meetings
• Follow detailed instructions
• Organise and revise own workflow
• Assist with proposals for revision of tariffs for products and services
• Perform other duties as assigned
• Rotate in similar roles as requested

Requirements

  • Degree or Diploma in Library and Information Studies or related qualification
  • Two-years of experience gained in a library environment
  • Computer literate
  • Good communication skills and customer service ethic (interpersonal/language/writing)
  • The ability to work well in a team and under pressure; and to perform moderately heavy physical work
  • Above average research skills will be a strong advantage
  • Ability to perform under stressful conditions
  • Ability to work well in a team
